In a recent discussion with Chicago News Weekly, Bob Fioretti, the Republican candidate for Cook County State’s Attorney, outlined his approach to restoring public safety, emphasizing both accountability and compassion. Known for his focus on job creation and community support, Fioretti brings a legacy of economic revitalization and public service to his campaign for the November 5 election.

Reflecting on his career, Fioretti recounted his deep roots in the Democratic Party, which he belonged to until 2022. “My first vote was in the Democratic Party in 1972. But over time, I felt that the party’s values—especially on family and fiscal responsibility—had shifted away from the communities I served,” he explained. His decision to switch affiliations to the Republican Party reflects a broader commitment to addressing Chicago’s issues directly, beyond party lines. “It’s not about party allegiance; it’s about accountability, safety, and supporting the people of Cook County,” Fioretti said.

Looking back on his work in the City Council, Fioretti emphasized job creation as one of his proudest accomplishments. “I brought 8,000 jobs to my ward. It’s about creating permanent, meaningful employment for people who need it most,” he said, aiming to bring the same dedication to the State’s Attorney’s office by supporting rehabilitation and preventive measures to address systemic issues fueling crime.

Fioretti spoke on the contentious SAFE-T Act, expressing support for judicial discretion: “Judges should have the ability to look at an individual’s history, assess whether they are a threat, and make decisions accordingly,” he stated. According to Fioretti, a rigid approach could harm community trust, underscoring his belief in a balanced approach that holds people accountable without eroding public confidence.

A proponent of community-based solutions, Fioretti discussed his focus on mental health and educational programs to reduce recidivism. “We can’t just prosecute crime—we need to address the root causes,” he said, advocating for mental health resources, job training, and educational programs for at-risk youth. “If we can find jobs for people, especially young people, before they commit a crime, that’s how we truly change things,” he added.

His platform also includes support for law enforcement, with a particular emphasis on transparency and community relations. “The trauma isn’t just on the victim; it affects the officers too, who see these tragedies up close and often bring that burden back to their families,” Fioretti noted, calling for additional resources and training for police to strengthen their bond with the communities they serve.

In discussing his campaign, Fioretti emphasized his vision for a State’s Attorney’s office that fosters unity rather than division. “It’s not about ‘us versus them’ or making decisions based on political alignment. It’s about working together across all communities,” he explained. For Fioretti, Cook County deserves an office that serves everyone, regardless of background or political affiliation: “This is the greatest city in the United States, and everyone deserves the same sense of safety and opportunity.”

As Fioretti’s campaign heads into its final days, his message resonates with Cook County residents seeking a State’s Attorney committed to fair, proactive change. For those interested in hearing the full discussion, tune into the podcast on Chicago News Weeklys YouTube channel.
